Help name spelling

Help on 1839 marraige cert name spelt as CATHERINE SWEENEY ,FATHER EDWARD SWEENEY only birth i can find is CATHERINE SWINEY same Father MOther Elizabeth Gill in 1812 July 19th.IS it possible name changed over the years?Also Parents are down as SWINEY in 1807 on MARCH 23rd.?? .thanks in advance BOB and JEAN. PS, you all do great work by the way ,NO IM not SCRAWLING , where would we all be if you all werent there EH??.

It is entirely possible, I think it all depended on whether whoever was writing the records could spell and many people could not so were unable to tell whether what was entered was correct or not, I think a lot also depended on local accents and how the name was heard, then there is transcriber error and the fact that our encestors just liked to make it plain difficult for us. Bob - I have a Nailard who becomes Nalor, Naylor or Naylar add to that this lady never married and some of her 11 children have her surname and the others have her husbands, plus one or two use both names...so Sweeny to Swiney doesnt seem so bad ... Sue

I have Goodgen ,Goodgin,which becomes Gudgin and Gudgeon, some of the same family with same parents spell their name differently, but then if they couldn't read or write how did they know which one anyway! KIM
