Parish Records

Thanks everyone. I don't think it would be worth me ordering the records. I think at most I only have two generations staying in the same parish.

Depends on the parish - I know of an Oxfordshire parish where for a time in the (18th century burials included information about the deceased's parents, spouse and cause of death - think that's quite rare but is a bonus for me to have ancestors from there :) Most are as the others have said though - although in my experience most parish registers seem to have phases where dates of birth are recorded for baptisms. Just to add that the marriages from about 1750 had two witnesses, not sure about earlier ones though.

Hi Kathryn I think the baptism records before 1813 had just the names of the parents and possibly the age of the child if not a baby. After 1813 it included the occupation of the father and an address or might give mother's name and state if the child was illegitimate. Marriages before 1837 have the names of bride and groom and possibly the parish they belonged to and two witnesses who could have been relatives. Heather

Hi Kathryn I think it all depends on who wrote the registers and if they were having a bad hair day! I have seen some with very little info on as Jackie has said above. These have tended to be older entries. But I have had baptism records that have not only told me about the person being christened and their fathers occupation, but they also made a note of when and where the parents got married. Also marriage entries that have had the name of both fathers and occupations, where they were living and the name of the witnesses. The deaths have always tended to be a bit vague though. Jeanette

I know that online transcriptions do not contain all the information contained within parish records, but what exactly would they say? Would baptisms state the age or d.o.b. of the baptisee? Would professions or parents' names be given for marriages? My ancesters' moved around parishes frequently and it would be expensive to keep ordering all the parish records on fiche, especially if they were not going to yield any information than that online.
