it'll probably make sense if you can find out where Ancestry got it from. In general their parish and probate stuff is second-hand, lifted from existing publications that have gone out of copyright, not transcribed by them from original records. Something called Cheshire Wills and Administrations 1826-30 seems to be one of their sources and something called Marriages at Marton 1563-1769 seems to be another (this is Marton in Cheshire). Maybe these were unrelated articles in the same antiquarian society journal and later they put out an Additions and Corrections supplement which covered both

OK Bob, thanks a million ! ... thats put the cat amongst the pigeons ! The e.mail I have received is in respect of Wills etc that was found on Ancestry. and reads as follows ... Cheshire: - Wills and Administrations, 1826-1830 Marton Marriages. Addenda Et Corrigenda. Addenda Lancashire Wills County: Cheshire Country: England Shawcross, James, Salford, auctioneer. A May 1829 .... James Shawcross died without leaving a Will so I have his letter of Administration dated May 1829 ... this is the basic info I already know about ... have you any idea's why this 'Marton Marriages' may have been mentioned on Ancestry ?? I'm completely baffled now ... any chance this couple may have for some reason got married in Cumberland ? Any suggestions ??? Elaine :-0

The parish of Marton is bounded on the east by the parish of Dufton, on the south by the parish of St. Michael's Appleby, on the west by the parish of Kirky Thore, and on the north by the parish of Alston in the county of Cumberland: and contains in it three manors or lordships, viz. Marton, Brampton, and Knock; and in the whole about 173 families [in 1777]. :http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WES/LongMarton/

Hi, have any of you heard of 'Marton Marriages'. Could this be an area in which a person got married or a particular type of marriage ??? If you think its an area ... has anyone heard of Marton in either the Lancashire or Cheshire areas or close by ? I have just had this information sent to me by a really kind person, the basic info I already knew about but this is 'extra' please help if you can ... this may just be the break I need before packing up completely ... my head is too sore to continue banging it against a brick wall !! Elaine :-)
