If you look on the LDS site (familysearch.org) at the 1881 census you'll find a single sidney etherton born in Wandsworth 1870, obviously at some kind of boarding school unfortunately so you won't find the rest of his family. Good luck with your hunting |

Yes, his father was also called Sydney Arthur....I'll take a look at the Resource centre as you suggest |

Do you mean that his father was also called Sydney Arthur? I recommend that you look at the Resource Centre on GC which has a list of very useful links. I fóund it really useful when I was new to this - only six months ago. It's a steep learning curve... |

that was my grandfather. I have his birth certificate already but it is his father (my great grandfather) whom I am now trying to trace. I was not clear in my original mail. My great grandfather was probably born between 1870-1880 but not sure where. I assumed Chorlton as that is where my grandfather was born. But thanks for your reply, you also pointed out this 1837online site which I had not come across before. I'm new to all this ! |

I think this must be who you are looking for Etherton Sydney Arthur Chorlton 8c 863 Sep 1899 found in FreeBMD births. You'll need to send off for the birth certificate to find out his parents. Can't find him in 1901 census but that could be due to a transcription error. No other Ethertons seem to come from that part of the country. You'll probably have to look at 1837online to find the parents' marriage - doesn't seem to be on FreeBMD - yet. |

I am trying to find the origin of my great grandfather sydney arthur etherton. I believe he comes from the Chorlton upon Medlock area of Manchester as that is where my grandfather was born. He was married to a Caroline Beale probably between 1890 and 1900. If anyone can help me trace either my great grandfather or mother I would be very grateful. |
