Thank you Bob. I always wait for you to do the hard work for me to update my home page (because I don't understand it!). Thanks to Deb as well for the keeping up the very useful list. Marian

Brilliant Bob, I was going to do the same thing in my html editor, but now I can copy and paste yours. Thank you very much for your time.

Updated to Debs list from 27.08.2004 (she forgot to change the date in the heading !) I've just recently realised, why the first page is blank ! If the line is too long for the page i.e. a long web address with no blanks in it, then when I click on the topic, the first page is blank and I have to scroll down.

The list itself is ALL the text below, between, but NOT including, the "< ! ---------------------" and "------------------------- >" lines. 1) Hold down your mouse button at the top of the list and scroll down to the bottom of the list (so that its all highlighted). Then go to 'edit' at the top of this window, and 'copy'. 2) Open a text editor (NOTEPAD, in the 'Accessories' folder), go to 'edit' and 'paste' in the list. 3) Using 'Find and Replace' under the edit menu, replace all (.) with . 4) Save the file as "GC-links.HTM" or "GC-links.HTML" or any name of your choice, but DON'T FORGET to use .HTM or .HTML at the end (This can be written large or small, I'm only using large for emphasis, here). Be careful, some editors will add a .doc to the filename - you don't want that ! 5) Start the WINDOWS Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) and double-click on the file 6) And that should be it ! If you are connected to the Internet, you should now be able to click on any link and go to that website ! ---------------------------- Optional extras - a) Added by Shelli Coulby on 02/04/2004 09:50:22 I have saved it and then created shortcut from desk top. b) Added by Samantha Smith of Bournemouth on 02/04/2004 16:36:16 I added the page to my favourites so I can't lose it! c) Add comments, add links Each line has the following structure: LINK-TEXTCOMMENT_TEXT
The WEB_ADDRESS is the usual http://... web-address and this will not be shown. The LINK-TEXT is the underlined link in the display. I have used the whole web-addres here as links, but it could be any text. The COMMENT-TEXT can be any text you like. I have used Deb's [comments] here. d) Make this page your home page - i) Add your usual home page to this list, i.e. add a line Home PageAny suitable comments
Where HOME-PAGE-ADDRESS is YOUR homepage address ! - ii) Start the page in your browser. - iii) set this page as your start page (Internet Explore: 'Options', 'Internet Options' 'Current page') (not sure if that last button is right, I'm using a german copy of IE) e)Add your favourite GC-threads This is useful, if you have a favourite thread, that keeps getting lost. - Load your HTML file to an editor (NOTEPAD) - copy the line "<a href .... GC- Deb's List .....
" to a new line - change the thread type (bb_type=B means Tips Board, bb_type=G means General Topics Board) - find your thread in GC and note the thread number ( ... bb_orig_key=nnnnnn). - change the thread number in the copied line - change the text between "_blank"> and to GC - Thread name - store - If you are already connected to GC, you will now have Instant Access ! <!-----------------------------------------------

Best Websites - genesreunited

 *********************************
** BEST WEBSITES LIST 21/10/04 **
*********************************

Contributions by : GC Members
Summary by: Deb - The Leg Bones Connected To The..
HTML-Conversion by: Bob in Berlin

www.genesreunited(.)co.uk HAS to be the first site !
http://groups.msn(.)com/GCPhotospage [MEMBERS PHOTOS]

GR-Thread: Deb's List
GR-Thread: Links to Deb's list
GR-Thread: Free Census Data
GR-Thread: UK-BMD
GR-Thread: Online Parish Clerks OPC

http://130.15.161.100/census/index.html [1871 CANADA CENSUS - ONTARIO]
http://198.103.134.2/general/sub.cfm?source=collections/virtualmem [VETERANS AFFAIRS - CANADA]
http://amberskyline(.)com/treasuremaps/oldhand.html [DECIPHERING OLD HANDWRITING]
http://chrisb(.)4ce(.)co(.)uk/schools_site/index.php [UK SCHOOLS HISTORY SITE]
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk [MEDWAY COUNCILS ACHIVES]
http://comical-family-tree(.)com [IDEA FOR PRESENTS]
http://dialspace.dial.pipex(.)com/town/terrace/pd65/dby/kelly/index.htm [KELLYS DIRECTORY OF DERBY, NOTTS & LEICS]
http://davgw.net/connect/fhish.php [ST HELENS]
http://eh(.)net/hmit/ppowerbp/ [POUND - MONEY TRANSLATER OLD-NEW OR NEW-OLD]
http://eh(.)net/hmit/ppowerusd/ [DOLLAR - MONEY TRANSLATER]
http://fp.suffolksurnames.plus(.)com
http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com/ [BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS]
http://freecen.rootsweb(.)com [19TH CENTURY UK CENSUS]
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com [IGI NUMBERS]
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/~genm

I have taken Deb's "Best Websites List", converted the web-addresses to web-links. and saved it in an HTML-File. I can now load this file into my browser, and go to to any of these websites by clicking on the link, instead of entering the address everytime. Each link opens to a new window. .................................................... the "scroll-down" is necessary, because the internet addresses are longer than the width of the page !!
