Gaynor, I'm sure I was certified insane when I got married 24 years ago.LOL Sorry, couldn't resist that one. Seriously though, what an interesting bit of info. Did not realise that it took so long for the law to be passed. Regards Viv :-)

No one could divorce and remarry if the original partner had been committed.Thats how I understood it.My mother was three when her parents married as her fathers first wife was in an asylum and died suddenly. This would have been after 1937.Its got me thinking, perhaps they either didn't know that the law had changed or maybe there was another reason.

Gaynor hallo again! Found this site which states that the Divorce Act 1937 made insanity and desertion grounds for divorce (previously it had just been adultery) http://freespace.virgin.net/owston.tj/women.htm Helen whose team won the European Cup yesterday!!!!!

Hi Gaynor,Im pretty sure he would have had to live in sin,I think that still goes for today.(My husband thinks Im insane at times)People were put in asylems for all sorts of reasons in those days,I dont think it gave the go ahead for divorce. Somebody may know different,Good hunting Jan.

If a wife was certified insane in 1931 - what would the marital status of her husband have been i.e. could he re-marry or would he have to have lived in sin? Thanks Gaynor
