It does have pages missing. I found that a fairly commonplace name that I was searching for started with the Christain name "R". I have contacted them but had no reply. Helena

Melvyn If you know the year and place of birth and the full name, contact the Register Office for that area. You should be able to obtain a copy of the certificate from them without any registration number. Most of these offices will send the certificate in return for a cheque for £7 and a stamped addressed envelope. If they cannot find the correct certificate they will return your cheque. Might be a good idea to telephone them first. Rosemary(Essex)

The problems that I have experienced in the past using the BMD indexes on fiche in my local archives office were different spellings of the surname. Census enumerators made lots of spelling errors with some of my surnames but even registrars made a few errors.

I think the records are all transcribed but that not all births were registered - I have several in one family in the 1860s/70s missing. Either they were not registered or registered under christian names that were different to those they were recorded in the census under or married under. Frustrating isn't it? David

There have been a few cases of people finding pages missing on 1837online, presumably missed when filming, but I suppose you would have noticed if the alphabetical list didn't follow on. Have you checked the next couple of quarters, its possible they were late registering the birth. Also, early on it was the responsibility of the registrar rather than the parents to ensure births were registered so some births just weren't registered.

Hi Melvyn is there a possibility that his birth was registered under another christian name rather than the name he was always known as. I have been trying to find birthdates for my Mum's brothers and sister, only to find that her sister was down on 1837 online with a totally different name to the one she was always known as. rosemary
