On the Crowan 1841 census: Mary Bastard, 72, and Catharine Bastard, 38. Either the enumerator knew something we don't or they went through life with a very unfortunate surname! |

This is a genuine surname. I had a friend who worked in a library and came across a reader with this name, but it was (understandably) pronounced "bastaaaard". My husband also once met a woman called Mrs O'Looney. |

I went to school with an Anne Bastard but it was infants school and in the 40s so i didn't realise it was a strange name. I think she too used Bastaaaard!! Ann Glos |

Having an ordinary surname can also be embarrassing if your parents give you a first name which creates an awkward phrase. I knew a couple who when they were expecting their first baby, chose their favourite boys' names. He chose Sam and she chose Shaun. The problem? The child's surname would be Lamb! The solution: they had two girls! |
