Hello. Can any one help with a direction for this puzzle. My Great Grandmother was born. No doubt about it. Her parents William and Mary Harris lived in Tideswell in Derbyshire. Married in 1862. Three sons, Thomas, James and William born and registered and baptised. The youngest, William was born 1868. 2 more children, Fred and Clara, were born in Barrow-in-Furness, Fred first in 1876. Between William and Fred was the missing girl, Annie Elizabeth. She isn't registered or baptised in Tideswell, family has left Tideswell by 1871 census, not in Barrow either. 1881 census says Annie was born Tideswell, but the 1891 census says Settle, Yorks. Annie was 20 on 1891 census. How can I find her? Thanks Helen

Hi Helen, I know it won't make you feel any better, but I ahve the same problem with my great-granny too. I read a thread earlier today by Maz in the East End suggesting you look for Female on the Birth Register. Take a look at that thread - I've nudged it to the top for you. (It didn't help me, but you never know, you might strike lucky) Carole

I have the same problem with a G Granny....but i think i have found mine....but not 100% certain yet. I think i have found her born in a workhouse in Leyton. Like yourself I couldn't find her in the 1881 census...but i came up trumps with her living with her aunt and uncle in Norfolk with the surname Holm not Holmes....and there was always a mention of a name of Ladell...and guess what the aunts and uncles surname was LADELL....lol...Keep trying I have only been searching for this woman for about 7 years....and Good Luck Jayne

Thanks for your replies. I have a print out from 1837online of all Harris's born between 1868 and 1871. The 1868 has her brother William on it, which gives me a starting point. She isn't amongst the 'females'. I've almost decided she must be a changeling. I've one more birth record to try. After that I don't know.... Thanks again Helen

Apparently, birth registration wasn't initially compusory, so perhaps neither of our Great-Grannies were actually registered. I guess we'll never find them, the Census records will have to do. :-( Carole
