Hi, I don't know if you ever got any further with this one but...
Arthur Paine
Year of Registration 1859
Quarter of Registration Jul-Aug-Sep
Registration District Northampton
Registration County Northamptonshire
Mother's maiden name
Volume Number 3B
Volume Page 80
in case you hadn't.
This would make perfect sense, but no promises here. :-D

Hi everyone! Thanks for your help. My Arthur Payne did indeed marry Anne Vorley (or Ann Marie Vorley - depending on who she felt like when asked for her name!) On their marriage certificate Arthur's father's name is recorded as George Payne, a Hawker - so I think the Paine family, also from Harpole, are red herrings! George would have been born c.1839 - and, surprise surprise, I'm having trouble finding him too. I did find a George Payne of the right era on the 1881 census married to someone called Christian. I've also come across a Christian Branston who was born in 1838 in Heyford, Northants. As I had an uncle called Arthur Branston Dutton, I think this may be my great great grandmother... Meanwhile, I'm still looking for the birth of Arthur and the birth of George... not to mention their deaths!!! Still not sure about the Towcester entry on freeBMD. Suppose there's nothing for it but to take a deep breath, shell out another £7 and order the certificate!

According to www.streetmap.co.uk, Harpole is to the west of Northampton on the way to the M1. Helen.

Crista & Linda, In 1891 there are two Arthurs 1. Arthur Paine b. Harpole aged 27 2. Arthur Payne b. Harpole aged 32 Arthur Paine has wife Elizabeth and is living in Harpole Arthur Payne has wife Annie and is living Wellingborough I have Payne/Paine ancestors from Derbyshire and they can be a real pain (excuse the pun) as they seem to switch between the different spellings on every census, which makes tracing them v. difficult to say the least!! Emma.

Linda, I think his age is incorrect in 1901. In 1881, he is born in 1864. Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability Paul PAINE Head M Male 35 Harpole, Northampton, England Shoe Maker Esther PAINE Wife M Female 40 Harlestone, Northampton, England Shoe Makers Wife Arthur PAINE Son Male 17 Harpole, Northampton, England Shoe Rivitter Emma L. PAINE Daur Female 13 Harpole, Northampton, England General Serv Dom Ernest PAINE Son Male 11 Harpole, Northampton, England Shoe Rivitter Edith PAINE Daur Female 8 Harpole, Northampton, England Scholar Lila PAINE Daur Female 6 Harpole, Northampton, England Scholar Source Information: Census Place Harpole, Northampton, England Family History Library Film 1341375 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 1555 / 57 Page Number 2 His occupation is the same. Did he marry Annie Maria Vorley? Perhaps he lied about his age because she is older. Wouldn't be the first time that happened. Crista

Linda, Don't know if it's any help, but Genuki have that Harpole would be the Northampton registration district and not Towcester or Wellingborough - just to confuse things even more!! Emma.

I'm trying to find the birth of my great grandfather, Arthur Payne. According to the 1901 census he was born in 1859 in Harpole, Northants. However, the only Arthur Payne I've been able to find was born in Towcester in June 1857. Is Harpole anywhere near Towcester??? I was expecting to find the birth registered in Wellingborough... am I on the wrong track?
