Is there an Australian FreeBMD database?

Hi, does anyone know if there is a FreeBMD equivalent for Australia? The reason I ask is that I've recently been given two family trees, by different researchers, showing distant relatives in Australia from 1850 to present day. Although they match each other in the main, there are conflicts in certain sections. So I need to check which is right. Regards Paul

Hello Paul, As far as I know there's not a Freebmd like the UK one. It depends on what state your relatives come from, NSW has excellent coverage available online, and also has a searchable death record section for deaths that were advertised in the newspaper. You could join a Rootsweb mailing list for the area you are interested in if you can't find it online, the people on these lists are usually very knowledgable and often have resources on hand. I am from England, and living in Oz, but getting to know whats available here as one of my great grandfathers brothers came out here too... he was murdered.. cant find a trace of him... thas another story. If you are looking in NSW email me direct with some names and locations and I'll have a look and send some sites to you. Other people searching in Australia have had luck here at GC, and someone in Vic was recently offering lookups. Bye for now Diane NSW Australia

Hi Paul Look at http://www(.)genforum(.)geneaology(.)com (remove brackets). Read through the Australia site and you will soon see that there is a very helpful fellow there who has the Digger's Pioneer Index. He managed to find 2 orphaned 20+year olds whom I had lost after the 1881 census and tracked them through mariages, births and to their deaths in the 1940s and 50s inside 2 hours!!! Do take a look - it's free. There is also a cheap pay site for which you need a credit card which will give you the arrival dates and the ship on which they travelled. Happy hunting Marlene

I noticed this site in passing .... http://www.ausbdm.org/ I haven't tried this myself, as I have no australasian relatives so I can't comment, other than: try it and see, I hope it helps ! p.s. if somebody does try it out, maybe they could add their views on it here, for other searchers ...

Hi Bob, Just had a quick look and it is an exchange site same as ukbdm. Could be quite useful if you are lucky enough to find a relative on it. Certainly worth a try. Maggy
