Hi everbody, Just thought I would let you know, I phoned Hastings Register Office and they very kindly looked at the book and all the births at that time had a time of birth on them, so no twin. Maggie

Maggie, Don't forget that not all twins are born on the same day. All labours were natural so no intervention with drugs such as oxytocin to speed the second labour up. They could be registered on different days as well. Viv.

We have a number of certs for the 1830's and 40's where the time is shown but no record of them being twin births. I suspect that as the certificating system was new registrars put the time in to be sure, but that is only my guess. Regards. Keith

Just to add that twins need not be on the same page - bottom of one page and top of the next.

this debate has risen befoer, and i don't believe there was a satisfactory answer. In scotland I believe they always put the time of birth on the cert, and usually in england it indicates a multimple birth. I certainly has the times on my twins birth cert but thats a recent cert Sorry i can't help anymore Shelli

My great nannies husband was one of pair of twins and had the time in column with date born, there was also identical entry same vol and page number for his twin but not always this way apparently. But there is no hard and fast rule only generally really. zoë

I have just received the birth certificate of my Great Grandad and in the space where it has the birth date it also has the time, does this mean he was a twin or did they sometimes put the time in, this was in 1854. I have looked for another child with the same birth reference but no luck. If there was a twin and it was stillborn, it would'nt be registered anywhere would it???? Maggie
