Have you tried using LDS - put in the childs name date, country and often the parents names are there. I had to do this on several of my certificates that I couldn't read properly. For scottish ancestors www.scotsorigins.com is good as it allows a more detailed county and district search on the IGI.

If you can find him on a later census with his wife then you'll know his age and then perhaps you can find him on an earlier census with his parents? Heather

I have a marriage cert, for my g/grandfather, dated 1867 in bridgwater somerset, but i cannot understand the fathers christian name, is says his profession was labourer, underneath it says i think dec does that mean he was dead at that time. My g/grandfather was Henry Norris, marrying Fanny Bale. I am stuck can anyone tell how to find the name of his father.
