Yes, I agree regarding the VRI - I have found the right date but the year has been one or two out (compared with the register).

thanks for that guys. Helen thanks for the idea of settlement papers. i remember reading something about that or like it not long ago for Wiltshire and they were being indexed will have to go thru all my journals. Geoff i think tho you could be right however the IGI and VRI are slightly in this case wrong but they do point you in the rough direction to get the true dates. i have checked the microfilm of the Parish reg's and some of the dates are slightly out in the VRI and IGI. thanks again, KEVIN

Gosh, you have gone back a long way! I believe that when people moved away from their parish they had papers called "settlements" which meant that they would not be a drain on the new parish should they need financial support. If you check the A2A site you may find out if the settlement papers for either area survive.

Hindon to Bristol is just over 30 miles as the crow flies. According to VRI, there were the following baptisms of Nortons at Hindon (to Sam and Mary). Samuel 1690 Robert 1692 Roger 1702 Edward 1707 I think that the assumption that you have the right parents is very dodgy. I think your chances of finding evidence of a move are very slim indeed. Sorry.

I have traced my ancestors to 1703 in Hindon Wiltshire so far. This is a Baptism of someone called Roger Norton. It says on the record in the parish register that his parents are called Samuel and Mary. I have also found out that the first Nortons in Hindon were baptised in 1690 and this was Samuel Norton, parents Samuell and Mary. Therefore I believe that Samuel and Mary moved to Hindon Wiltshire in the late 1680’s. I have also found a Marriage for a Samuell Norton and a Mary Hughs in 1688 but this was in Bristol, about 50 miles away. This is the only marriage that I have been able to find between a Samuel Norton and a Mary. Are there any records that I can look at they may show them moving to Hindon from Bristol? Also do you think I have the right people?
