Was this always a name in it's own right or was a nickname. I have a marriage of a Charity Habberfield, but no sign of a birth |

Charity is certainly a name in its own right, my own family has a Charity who was known as "Aunt Chat". In Charles Dickens' novel "Martin Chuzzlewit", the Pecksniff daughters are [inaptly] named Charity and Mercy and called Cherry and Merry. I think the tradition of calling girls by names of virtues is originally puritan. When and where are you looking for your Charity's birth? |

Thanks for your comments. There is a Charity Habberfield married in Bristol 1854. The IGI has her born about 1833. I have some details of Bristol 1851 Census's and there's no Charity but there is a Charlotte |

Unfortunately, she's not on VRI. There were two pairs of Haberfields (on VRI) having kids in Brizzle at that time - Thomas+Mary, John+Keziah. |

That ties in with data I have in the census for 1851. I'll have to add her marriage certificate to the list to buy |
