Hi Everyone Received a wedding cert today, and there is a place name on it which looks like either Tawser Ross or Tanser Ross. The wedding was in York city. I have ploughed through the lists of place names on Genuki web site, and can't see anythng like it. The only ....... Ross I know of is Seaton Ross, but it's defintely not that. Any ideas? Pauline

I've had a quick look through the Ts in my Great Britain Atlas index, can't see anything likely. Ross doesn't sound at all Yorkshire to me. Can you compare the letters with others on the certificate for a clue? It is frustrating, sometimes when I'm trying to decipher things I wish our ancestors had insisted on BLOCK CAPITALS!

Just seen previous reply - I too looked through T's in Atlas and on my AutoRoute Express - No luck I'm afraid. Most of the options I gave seemed to come up with Scotland!!

Wish you hadn't asked - it's bugging me - tried again on AutoRoute in case it was Road NOT Ross - still no luck. I wonder if it was an old Road that doesn't exist anymore.Cheers Chris

Thanks for your efforts. I'm sure it's in Yorkshire as all the rest of the family history is there. I've tried the comparison of letters on the rest of the cert, and nothing else seems to be the same. Block capitals would have been great! I will keep on trying to decipher things :-( Night all Pauline

Pauline, hi I've just had a look on and old map and found a Rossall about 20 miles NE of York also area a bit more NE was called Buckrosse Wapon (dates back to Pre Domesday) . Have you tried using the word Foss or Fosse instead of Ross? York is on the river Fosse good luck Dave

How good is your knowledge of Yorkshire place names? Have a look in the Yorkshire section of GENUKI. There is "Where is it in Yorkshire" in there. Also try www gazetteercouk Martin

Hi Pauline, You could also try old-maps(.)co(.)uk. If you click on the gazetteer, then Yorkshire, it will give you an alphabetical list of all the maps it has in Yorkshire. Something may look familiar to you. Think it's worth a try anyway! Maggy
