Lopping rights and the right to collect furze (gorse) were some of the rights granted by landowners to their teneants and others. It wasn't much of a deal because the tenants needed wood to repair fences and carts etc so that they could pay their tythes or tenths of their earnings to the landlord as rent. I don't suppose this helps but I love bashing the titled gentry I was probably a serf if I can ever get back that far. best regards Dave

Stewart, I am not sure of the full history but the locals could 'lop' branches from trees in the forrest. This right was removed with enclosures but. The recompence to for the loss of rights was the building of Lopping Hall in Loughton as a community building. Bob

Stew What a shame. My idea of bliss is spending Saturday in a library!

Does anyone have any information about any of the people involved in this? I know that thomas Willingale was famous for rebelling against the plans to fence off parts of Epping Forest in Loughton, and someone from the loughton historical Society told me that the Higgins family was also involved. there is a story in my family that some of my great uncles (possibly) were also involved. My great great grandfather (Thomas Sear who was married to Elizabeth Higgins) was living in that area of Loughton at the time so it's possible that it's him who was involved. Has anyone come across any information about this before? Does anyone actually know what I'm talking about?! cheers Stew
