Royal Navy Ship

Following my grandmothers death recently, we were going through some old photos and found one of a man in naval uniform on the deck of a ship. Mum thinks this may be one of her uncles (although she doesn’t know which side of the family). It was suggested that we try and find out through the ships records as he is wearing his cap which clearly shows the name ‘Wilderness’. Unfortunately, I can find no trace of a ship by this name anywhere (there is nothing on the Royal Navy website which lists all ships which have either been lost, decommissioned or are still serving). Any suggestions where I can look?

Try contacting the Historical Society at the Royal Naval Dockyard at Chatham. A search on Google will find them. They are really, really helpful - for a donation! Judith

There was an American ship called The Wilderness, try this site http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/w8/wilderness.htm Hope it helps

Thanks. It definitely said Wilderness (we got the magnifying glass out!). I'll give Chatham a go and see if we can find out anything from them. Mandi
