My grandfather was born Harry James Tucker, however he married and died as Robert Tucker and Robert is on all of his childrens birth certificates. So yes it is possible that your relative did the same. Do you have the names of any of her siblings? It may be best to get their certificates first, I did this with my grandfathers siblings and it led me to him.

I had a terrible time trying to find my grandmother.I was always told she was Rebecca Lilian which she is on her wedding and death certificate. Birth certificate in 1881 is Lillie. 1881 census says Tilbey, 1891 census Lilly and 1901 census Liliam! No wonder it took months to find her and I didn't know her maiden name either!!! Viv.

Thanks for that Kim, Can I just ask did your grandmothers marriage certificate give her birth certificate name or her "known by" name ?

My grandmother's name she is known by is not on her birth certificate, Often people were named after aunts /uncles cousins or any relatives but known as something comppletely different. in my grandmother's case it was "extra "godmothers who ended up at the christening. So yes I would say don't discount anything. But tread carefully and don't assume. I assumed My paternal grandmother born 1903 parentsfrom the 1901 census, not realising that the "mother" on the census died in 1901and the father remarried. KIM

Hello I've been looking, and failing to find a birth record for my grandmother Elizabeth Rudd for a while now. Despite much help from the lovely members of this site I am no closer to locating her. I have her marriage certificate and my dads birth certificate which give her name as Elizabeth Maud/Mary Rudd. I have found her on the 1901 census aged 2 called Eliza, born in Swansea. I have checked through all possible birth years on 1837 and have found no matching record. However there is a matching record for Emily Rudd, which I have found no corresponding census or death record for, could this be my grandmother ? I have also found a Winifred Rudd born at the right time in the area I would expect (Pembroke) with a father called Robert. I have read that it was not unheard of for parents to change their mind about a name after registration, or that names could be changed on confirmation has anyone else come across this.
