It would seem that the steep hillsides around that area are prone to slipping; there was one last month- http://www.britishwaterways.*co.uk/newsroom/stories/waterway_reopens.html (delete *) I would imagine the construction work of 1881 was a remedial measure against such slippage at the time. |
