Nina, I haven't actually viewed the 1901 census image. I have just a list of the occupants of the household. I had assumed, possibly wrongly that James as a mariner was away at sea, which is why Annie had claimed to be wife to head of the household. Either way I have been able to progress a little further back with my research, and at some stage can keep pegging away to see if I can find him at all on the 1901 census. thanks again Lynne

Lynne I'm not sure I understand. Did you actually look at 1901 image. Index shows Annie as wife and not head of house implying that husband is there but not on index correctly.

Hi Emma, Thank you so much for checking the 1891 census. This is definitely my Gt. Granddad and you have knocked down a very large brick wall for me. Thank you so much for your time and trouble. Thanks also to Nina, yes I had looked at the 1901 census and had wondered what was happening. Again thank you both very much. Regards Lynne

Have you looked at the 1901 image for Annie Stobie ? I ask because using the advanced search shows her as wife to head of household, which probably means James transcribed incorrectly.

Hi, I need some thoughts please on my current brick wall. My Gt.Grandfather is James Stobie, I have his marriage certificate for 1886 to Annie Springford, he is aged 23 and a mariner, Fathers name Peter. Married in Victoria Docks area of London.I cannot find a birth for him anywhere. Family lore has it that the family were Scots. I have been onto Scotlands People and cannot find him there, I have checked 1837 online and not much luck there. He is not on the 1901 census although his wife and children are, being a mariner he was possibly at sea. I cannot find him or his Father Peter on the 1881 census. The main problem really is I haven't a clue where he was born. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Lynne
