Thank you both. I'll keep trying and see what I come up with. Sue.

Do you have an LDS centre near you? They might be able to get you films of the St Leonard's parish records. If not, post a message on the Records Office board to see if anyone is going to the LMA who could have a look for you. Janice

Hi, The first thing I'd do is check John's marriage to Mary. It is after 1837 so should be on the GRO index. That will give his father's name. It would be a good idea to get the birth cert of one of their children which will confirm the mother's maiden name. The IGI is full of errors and nothing you see on there or in the BVRI can be assumed to be correct without checking original records. The LDS have filmed a lot of Parish records and these can be ordered at LDS centres all over the world. Gwynne

I've been given a tree that my late aunt and my cousin meticulously worked on, and a John Clifford /Catherine ? marriage was given as the starting point in 1854. I've taken it on as a hobby / major distraction from work and family duties! I've been working on John's parents - Thomas Clifford & Mary Coles. Their marriage 27 Jun 1802 was found on the IGI yesterday by a distant relation who I found on this site over the weekend...we both had the same names coming up!!! Now I'm trying to work out Thomas's line...they were married at St Luke Old St, Finsbury London, and then there's a Thomas Clifford born in 1780(and another in 1781 -an infant death perhaps?) to John Clifford & Ann. The christenings were at St Leonards, Shoreditch and John was born about 1750 inShoreditch and married to Ann about 1773 Shoreditch, so the dates and areas seem to fit. I'd love any guidance as to how to verify dates and addresses etc, and to find other siblings of Thomas. A complication is that I'm in New Zealand, so need e-mail / internet access as I obviously can't pop in to check records!Any ideas?
