Naval Uniform Question

Can anyone enlighten me ....I have a photo of my grandfather in a naval uniform (WW2 time) and he has a looped insignia on the sleeves above the cuff. What rank if any did this signify? He's also wearing a flat peaked cap would this mean he was an officer? Hope someone can help. Thanks. Sioux |

HI Just had a look at your photo. your grandfather is a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. regular officers, the ring around the sleve is straight where as R.N.V.R Officers the ring is wavy. all the best mal |
