I am trying to find the birth of a Walter Bute born c. 1857. I have marriage and death certificates, but can't find the allusive birth to go back to next generation (have father's name from marriage cerificate (1878), but don't know wife's name). I can guess at who his mother was as James Bute was father on marriage certificate & a confectioner and I have found a James Bute, a confectioner living with a Christina on the 1881 census, but of course there is no guarantee that this is Walter's mother All the census returns say that Walter was born in Dundee in Scotland. I have looked on the Scottish web site to try and find a birth of him but to no avail. Any tips on how I should move forward? Many thanks, Natalie |

Here are the family on the 1871 census. On the original image the Father's occupation is confectioner. Looks like the same people to me. Does this help? Thanks, At least that points me in the right direction if they were all living in the same household together, and makes it more likely that Christina was his mother! Natalie |
