Many thanks for both replies. I've looked again at the 1891 census and you're both right. He is listed as employer. Thanks again. Rachel

He was a magistrate or Justice of the Peace. That is an unpaid job but was usually restricted to the "pillars of society" who tended to be rich businessmen. Others were unable to take time off from work or perhaps lacked the educational skill needed. His paid job would be running his little worsted spinning business. John

Hi Rachel, Could it be that he was the owner of the factory? The 1891 has columns to say whether people are employers or employed - this could give a clue. Judith

In 1881 an occupation is - Magistrate Worsted Spinner and in 1891 - JP, Worsted Spinner. The man in question has 4 servants in each census, but why if he was a proffesional would be also be in the factory? Or can the 2 be linked?? Has anybody else come accross this? Thanks. Rachel
