As the grand daughter has the same surname as her grandparents she is either a grand daughter via a son or if she is the daughter of a daughter then the daughter wasn't married Shelli

Find the reference to granddaughter's birth - her certificate will give her parents' names.

Have a look for them on 1891 and 1901 census, also check births on BMD records like on 1837 online or freeBMD, not easy if a common name like Smith.

Have found a relation in 1881 who was married and had his grand daughter staying with him - therefore follows he must have had children, how do I find them if no idea of their names, especially if he had a daughter who married and changed her surname?? Cate :-s
