i havent used the 1901 census site for awhile having given up hope of ever finding my grandmother but since downloading the decoder ive had another look. to those of you whove never found a match try every silly way and have another go, ive found claude in with the females (never thought of swopping the sexes) ive found such peculiar names as thorza and zilpha (apologies to those of u called that) ive found many with just the first letter of their name ive found benjn in with the benjamins ive found jame with the janes elizth for elizabeth and the list goes on so keep on trying u never know!

Like you Brenda, I have found males in the females, strange spellings and initials, when you get frustrated & a little deperate;) You'll try anything.....Ha Ha!!

Still haven't found my grt grandfather but husband Great grandfather was Lewis Judd, He was actually on the original census image as Louise Hy Tudd Male so I do sympathise . i also had a relative whose surname was entered as just ....., which is very helpfuL, now isn't it. KIM

Has anyone tried swopping the names, putting surname where christian name should be and vice versa, found one of my lot like that. Gen

yEP, tRIED SWAPPING NAMES, a good one is to put no surname in at all and just try birthplaces,and first names and age.But that only works if you got the right birthplace or if they haven't decided to put something different down though.... Kim

im looking for a james griffiths so i tried griffith james (seems to b a very welsh name) so lots of them i did come up with a james grifthis tho. still its given me some hope hes in there!

Husband's great grandfather and great-great-grandfather had the same name and lived in the same area. I was unable to find them with a normal search because they were listed with sen. and jun. after their names. I eventually found sen on the address search and found jun when I checked the fiche in the local library. I hadn't tried just using the christian names but I will give that a try now. Thanks for the tip. Heather
