Hi All, Below is the link to the GRO in Scotland with the prices of the certificates. The costs are £13 or £16 depending on which method you use to order them. The £10 ones are the historical ones that you order via Scotland People as far as I am aware. I will be happy to get you copies of Scottish certificates from 1904 to 2004 for £10 each. The older ones you can order for £10 anyway from SP or print the images if they are available for £1 each. I hope that all makes sense. http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/grosweb/grosweb.nsf/pages/leaflet2#price Kind regards Margaret www.scotsconnected(.)com

I have just looked at this site. It says when you go into their policy section that they leave a "cookie" on your computer to enable them to track the sites you are looking in. I don't like this at all, how many people read all the policy notes on sites. This is the last thing I would want. The cookie seems to be called "default@adopt".

They appear to be professional researchers and would be offering their services to people abroad etc. They are probably not breaking any laws and unfortunately because of that the credit card company will probably not refund the money. They are obviously people to be aware of as they are cashing in on the latest obsession of ours with getting Family history information. A case of buyer beware Im afraid and a hard lesson learnt by someone who was unaware of the correct and cheapest way to get a certificate. poor girl I do feel sorry for her. Ann Glos

I have never heard of this site before. If you wish a certificate ordered you can contact New Register House in Edinburgh and get the proper certificate, costing £13 on line sent to you. The staff there are very helpful. Also if you are not sure of the year you should contact one of the reputable organisations on the web. One of these is called scotsconnected(.)com where a lady called Margaret Drummond will be able to help you. Certificates from her cost £10 including postage. As far as the "lost" certificate is concerned, the card company should be contacted to get the payment returned.

I agree she should contact her credit card company. They should be able to sort it out.

I just looked at this site which seems to be well set up. HOWEVER the prices are crazy!! Standard service is £25 for a certificate plus £10 for each year searched. I didn't go further to see postage etc. The express service is TWICE that ie £50 for one certificate. This makes the GRO and Scotland's People look like bargain basements!! Anne

Most things are open to abuse, only use BONA-FIDE operatives

Lynne Report 29 Apr 2004 09:11

My friend needed her birth certificate and asked for my help as she knew I was familiar with the process. However, as she was born in Paisley, Scotland, we found the telephone number. She could not get through so later looked on the web and came up with the above site. She ordered her certificate via this site at the end of March using her bank card and £44.73 was deducted from her account on 31 March. Yesterday, as she had not received the certificate she got the telephone number from the website and rang them. She was told by the man at the other end that she should have had a confirmation email, he did not know what had happened to the certificate and she would have to track it (she does have an email address but does not use it). When she protested that as they had taken her money, surely they should track it, the man became very rude and arrogant. All this sounds a bit dodgy to me - has she been conned? Has anyone used this site to order certificates? Is it normal practice to charge so much for a certiciate? Any comments / advice would help. Thanks Lynne
