Hi All Had a chat with my dad (who this elusive line belongs to) and he said go with the Donkin birth line as well. I'm glad in a way as I'd come to yet another brick wall with the Bransby line in 1813! Thanks for your comments Kay

Perhaps follow the one you "feel the most for", then when you start getting stuck, switch to the other one for awhile. Or both at once.

I'd say follow the birth parents line.

I have come across what is probably a common problem in genealogy but a new one to me. I have just discovered that my 2xG grandfather Robert Bransby was 'adopted' by his grandparents and took their name. He was born DONKIN to his grandmothers son by her first marriage. She married a BRANSBY and by the time of the 1881 census he had taken their surname. His daughter Mary was my nana's mother so we have always known them as Bransby. My dilemma is whether I now follow the Bransby line or the Donkin one. Any ideas???? Kay
