Sorry for the long delay in replying - I've been away for a few days. Judith -- Thankyou - I have a CD of transcribed parish registers and these all seem to stop around 1837. But I suppose, thinking about it, there would have been less reason for people to bother transcribing them after 1837. I live in Aberdeen, so it will be a while before I can get down to Kent, but I'll put this on my list of things to look up when I do. She -- Thanks for this. Is this from IGI ? sorry I'm not familiar with the format, I've never had any success finding my folks on there before. One of these Emma's is the right age - but I thought that her parents names were William and Martha. Although I only have circumstantial evidence. (I've ordered her marriage cert so I should know father's name at least in a week or so). Charles is certainly a family name, she had both a brother and son named Charles. I'll put this lot in my records, even if it doesn't turn out to be this Emma they may well tie in somewhere. Thanks again, Ann

Ann, I think you'll find that nearly all parish registers do exist for this period, usually in the County Record Office. What may have led you to believe they don't is that the LDS films are mostly of pre 1837 records so often events this late are not on IGI. Staplehurst All Saints is in the Canterbury archdeaconry and its original records are in Canterbury Cathedral Archives but I think you'll probably find microfilm copies of them in each of the Kent records offices. Try this website for further help http://www(.)kent.gov.uk/e&l/artslib/archives/home.html Hope you find your Emma soon. Regards Judith

Thanks Crista I should have checked - yes I think it was June 1855. Nevermind - as the area was right it may be a relation anyway. Good idea about the previous marriage. I hadn't looked at the possibility as I have her on the 1881 with her husband and his brother-in-law, Alfred Standen. I had assumed that Alfred was Emma's brother - but I suppose it is just possible that he was her brother-in-law from a previous marriage. I have Emma's marriage cert on order (and I'm pretty sure this one is right !) so that would tell me. Irene - thanks for reminding me that she may not be registered. Trouble is the parish records from this late don't seem to have been kept in many places - but I suppose I can keep hunting. There again she may have lied about her age. Thanks to all who've looked at this with fresh eyes. Ann

Ann, Was the birth you found for June 1855? I ask because there are 2 deaths for then. Deaths Jun 1855 Standen Male Maidstone 2a 273 Standen Female Maidstone 2a 273 Also, are you sure Emma wasn't married before she married Walter? Her maiden name might not be Standen. Crista

Ann - unsure until I get a cert - but I may have twins in my tree - they are registered in the same page and ref - so it is likely, I think Good luck Gaynor

Hi, It was common for parents not to give a child a name if it wasn't expected to live. Have a look at the deaths for the same quarter. On twin birth certs the time of birth is noted so when the cert comes you will know if it was a twin. Gwynne

Not all births were recorded until 1875 when it became law for the parents to record all births. So it is possible that Emma's is missing. It was up to the register to go round and records births 1837-1875 if they were out visiting or moved they could have been missed. They may have had her christened, so it possible to search the parish church records for that. If the page numbers are close then its possible twins. I am not sure on this as I don't have records of any twin in the family. Good Luck Irene

I was looking for the birth cert for Emma Jane Standen, born according to several census' in 1854/55 in Staplehurst. Having had no luck on FreeBMD, I hunted through the relevant years on 1837. I didn't find an Emma Jane, but I did find a birth registered as Female in the right place at the right date range. I decided to order the cert anyway. I think that I know the names of Emma's parents - so I should be able to confirm whether this is her - but if it is - will there be a record later of her name and if so how do I go about getting it. Also under the Female is another birth registered as male, which appears to have the same page ref. Is this likely to be a twin ?? I'd be greatful for anyone's views/experience, Ann
