Trouble is that the old army records are on paper in number order and during the war so many were enlisted its a nightmare trying to find them even for official purposes. You definitely need his full name and date/year of birth and also the approximate date he was called up ie Spring/Summer and year before you can realistically trace him through his service. Depending on how old he was determined when he was called up as did his occupation ie reserved occupation etc. If you can find out his regiment then you have a better chance with regimental history. Did he have any medals? That could determine whether he served overseas and in what theatres of war.

If you know or have an idea of the place where he might have enlisted that could give you a starting point because each town recruited primarily for its own regiment. did he have a profession? he may have enlisted as an engineer for instance. did he live near to a port - navy perhaps or an airfield? ask at the local recruiting office they may have the info you need good luck Dave

I am trying to track an Uncle who I have very little info about other than born in the early 1900s. I know that he joined up/conscriped into the WW2 but don't know what regiment. Basically I am starting with very little but want a lot!!! Can anyone suggest where I could start a search to try and find what regiment he would have joined? Advice would be much appreciated.
