I have been trying to find my GG Grandfather for I don't know how long - his name on his marriage cert is Richard Chantler and it states his father was Peter McGregor Campbell. I decided to look for Richard's birth cert b 1861 Kentish Town in the not so obvious as I have never been able to find him - when low and behold I found a birth of a Peter McGregor Campbell b 1861 Camden Town. I ordered this cert and it states that Peter's father was Peter McGregor and mother Georgiana Campbell formely Chantler. At this point I was getting very confussed - why would Peter change his name to Richard Chantler. Richard had a brother John Chantler but on his birth cert it states his parents were John Chantler and Georgiana Hall - everyone for some reason keeps changing their name and I really do not know where to look. Any suggestions? Linda

Hello Thelma Lets see in 1881 Georgiana had married John Hill Living in St Pancras Georgiana Hill Head aged 44 John Chantler Son aged 21 Richard Chantler Son aged 19 Rosa Hill Dau aged 10 Maria Chantler Mother aged 66 I found John's birth cert and it states John's father was John Chantler and mother Georgiana Chantler nee Hall. I found Georgiana's married to John Hill and it stated her name was Georgiana Maria Campbell not Hall. Anyway I have never been able to find Richard's birth so I decided to look for a connection and along came a Peter McGregor Campbell b 1861 Camden Town parents Peter McGregor and Georgiana Campbell nee Chantler as Richards father was Peter McGregor Chantler it seemed that there was a connection. So did Richard for some reason change his name from Peter to Richard? As for the George Chantler I found him as being born in 1808 in Rudgwick, Sussex to William & Sarah plus he had a brother John b 1811 - this is the story and I really do not know how to sort it out and loosing the plot. It was very common for couples to live together as husband and wife without having got round to a wedding, with the "wife" taking the title Mrs and the husband's surname And it was very common for their kids then to be registered as if the parents were married. And sometimes if the couple parted, the "wife" having been known for years as Mrs Husbandsname, would keep that name and describe herself as a widow. Worth looking for a Peter-Georgiana marriage, but my guess is there wasn't one. Peter/Richard was the son of Peter McG Campbell Snr, but called himself Chantler later because that was his mother's "real" name when he was born -- either the widow of John's father, John Chantler Snr, or maybe still married to him but separated If Peter/Richard wanted to dissociate himself from his natural father, he'd have to change the "Peter McGregor" bit as well as the surname. Or perhaps he was always called Richard unofficially Then when he came to get married, he fibbed a bit, he made his father's surname match the one he was using himself, to avoid explanations. That was also common. Presumably his father wasn't at the wedding so he could say what he liked. It doesn't mean that his father ever actually did call himself Chantler
