TRYING TO FIND WHERE A LONDON STREET WAS- ANY ADVI

Hi, Has anyone got any advice as to how to find out the location of a London street that is no longer there. A birth certificate from 1852 gives the address as 4, Shards/Shands Place. It was in the North East district, City of London. Lost London Streets don't have any listings for "S" and the site has not been updated since 1999. Gen Docs Victorian London A-Z index does not list it. Thanks Rose

Hi Rose, I had a look on the 1861 census index - Shards Place comes up as Shard's Place, Little Bell Alley on the City of London cd so perhaps it worth looking for Little Bell Alley instead. Hope this helps, Emma.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.*com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_Pages/ENG_pages/lon.htm The best collection of old London maps anywhere but the streets are not indexed so you will have to hunt around. Try this for Little Bell Alley http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=8771 Bob

Rose You could also try www(.)motco(.)com/Maps/81004/Seriesa-left-frame_border.asp. Just found my old london street on there. Kim

Thanks to Julie, Emma, Jane and Bob, I looked up Little Bell Alley on the site Bob suggested and is says it was around where Copthall Avenue is now. I had tried looking on old maps but didn't really know which area to check. I know now. Emma, would you mind seeing if there are any HOUGHTON's in Shards Place in 1861? I would be very grateful. Rose, Sorry no Houghtons living there in 1861. Emma.
