I think the 1871 census is the way to go, I'm gonna put a post on the records office and see if anyone on there has got the 1871 Lincs census. I think I've just found a James Cooling born 1870 on FreeBMD in the right area. I might order the certificate and see where I go from there. Thanks for your help anyway. Rachel

Think I'd look for Thomas' marriage somewhere between James and Betsey's births, sorry, I can't remember their ages. I wonder if anyone could do a look-up on parish registers. I don't suppose 1871 census for the area is available, is it? Heather

I've no idea about his mums maiden name. He was 11 in 1881 and Thomas & Betsy were both 28. I haven't been able to find his birth or their marriage on FreeBMD. I don't have any credits left on 1837 but I'm thinking of investing in a couple more. But I do look for Creasey, Cooling or Dowse? On James' marriage cert fathers name is blank, maybe because he's dead? or maybe because he didn't know who his dad was. I was hoping Creasey was his mums maiden name but can't find a match yet. Was james born before the parents married and was his mum's name Cooling? Heather

Thanks anyway for looking, didn't realise that there aren't any discs with the original images. I've got a problem with the Dowse family. I'll put it on here just in case anyones got any ideas. In 1881 James C Dowse is living with his mum Betsy E & dad Thomas (according to LDS) and a couple of sisters, in Lincolnshire. In 1891 James Dowse is head of house with mum Betsy Helen Dowse & dad Thomas Dowse & various sisters in Wombwell, Yorks. Everyone except the youngest child was born in Lincoln, matching the 1881 census. In 1892 Dec 26, James Creasey Cooling marries Betsy Emily Muxlow. Marriage is witnessed by George Young & Betsy Watson. In 1901 James C Cooling is living with wife Betsy E Cooling, several kids & sister Harriett Dowse in Wombwell, Yorks. James' birthplace is the same as in the previous census and his sister's birth matches too. I've been searching various sites and I can find a death for Thomas Dowse, right age, right reg district in Sep 1891. Could be James' dads death. Also on Free BMD on the page where it lists James Cooling & Betsy Muxlow's marriage the other people marrying are Betsy Dowse & Abraham Watson. James had a sister called Betsy so I think its either his mum remarrying (very quickly) or his sister. Maybe they had a double marriage. But why has his name changed!!! I know its very confusing but has anyone any idea? Please?? Rachel

Rachel The 1881 census CD's are exactly the same as the family search website. They are a transcription. They came out years before the census was online. If you need to see the original you will either have to look at the Family Records Centre or visit the main library or County Record Office local to the census place you are interested in. Perhaps put a request on the Record Office board on GC. Margaret

Hi Rachel You didn't say what the surname was. There are three households on that page with that address, none of the children have different names to parents. Of course, this is a transcription too. Heather
