Morgans to Morgan

My maiden name was Morgan, dad was William Morgan and as far as I knew his parents were also Morgan. Then I started looking at the family tree and I have found that dad's dad's name was Morgans. I now have a copy of his marriage certificate which shows the surname as Morgans and his fathers name as Morgans. Dad's birth is indexed under Morgan (I'm waiting for the certificate) How come the (s) was dropped off when his birth and all his siblings births were registered.

This sort of thing happened all the time, especially pre-1900, partly because of illiteracy (ie the registrar etc would write the name as they heard it, since the parents couldn't write). I have a family thats changed from Atkins to Adkins and back again over a few generations. It could also be that they simply decided to drop the s.

Thanks Paul, Do you think I should be looking at Morgan or Morgans to find my grandfathers birth record. Looking for a Morgan in Wales in like finding a needle in a haystack !
