I've found the baptism record for my ggg Grandad Benjamin Tims, he was baptised 12 December 1824 at Barford St John church, his parents are Thomas Tims and Mary, I havent managed to find any census records with them all named together. I have found two possible marriage entries though for Thomas and Mary :- Tho Tims married Mary Hayward 1818 in Bicester or Tho Tims married Mary English 1821 in Adderbury, both of these places are quite close to Banbury which is where Benjamin was born, but how do I find out his Mums maiden name?

Can you search for other siblings and see when they were born, or do you know if he was the eldest child ? That may give you some clues . I think you've got a hard one there, unless you can find any solid identifying facts. Good luck hope you find out! KIM

I've got the baptism records for his brother and sister - they were baptised 1822 and 1827 at Barford St John aswell, but I havent found any other siblings :-( I feel a brick wall moment coming up :-(

It's a long-shot, but it might be worth looking later on to see if the wife re-married, post-1837, after Thomas died (that is if you're 'lucky' and he died relatively young and, of course, before her). You could then order the certificate for her re-marriage, which should have her father's name - thereby identifying her maiden surname. Alternatively, were marriages witnessed in those days ? If so, and if you can gain access to the original register with signatures etc, the witnesses might give a clue. Simon

it could also be possible that the first Mary died and then he married again to another Mary. check the NBI for possible burials of a Mary Tims between the dates.

Looking at the names of the witnesses may give you some useful info.Good luck! Joan

According to IGI one of the couples (always Timms with 2 m's) baptised a string of 10 kids at Bicester between 1819 and 1833. You could squeeze Benjamin into the same sequence, but not all 3 of the Barford babies. Seems likely the Bicester 10 are Mary Hayward's kids, but the raw records might say something about occupation and residence that would confirm it, then she'd be ruled out

Thanks everyone for their help and feedback. I hope it is Mary English, at least that name will be easier to follow (at least I hope so anyway!)
