I also think that there are some pages missing from 1837 online. I had searched for my great great grandfather many times over the last few months and then last week i found in 1848 dec qtr which i am sure i have looked at a number of times before. Maybe if you ask some one on here who is going to the GRO at the Family records Centre to look for you in the orginal indexes.

If you could give us names and date of birth or possible marriages, we could try and help. Also would it be possible she was born before her parents marriage as this often throws a spanner in the works. What was the fathers name as well. Irene

Julie Another thought - does/did your gran have a passport - she would have needed a birth certificate to get one.

How certain are you about her date/place of birth? Is the registration district now the same as it would have been the year she was born? Could her name be wrongly spelt? I've found my great-grandfather didn't die in the village in which he lived for 60 years, but in London and was somehow transported a long way back to the village for burial. Have you tried contacting the local records office?

Hi my gran is actually still alive - we are trying to obtain her birth certificate as we are trying to trace her mother's line and she does not know her mother's maiden name (her grandmother married five times!) We have not been able to find her parent's marriage certificate. I guess I am just going to have to keep hunting that way, my guess is that her birth was not registered but I would have thought she would have known about this. Next time I see her I will ask her if she remembers having a birth certificate at any point. thanks

Julie - how accurate is the date of her death that you have? I'll give you an example - my gt grandfather - everything about him said that he was born in 1881. Newspaper reports, my mum etc all said he died when he was 52. Means he died in 1933 - his death was registered in Jun qtr of 1931 - it stated he was 52. Was his birth date wrong - an enigma and I'll never know. Keep looking and good luck. Gaynor

MY GRT GRANDFATHER born in 1887 was never registered he was one of nine and only 3 of them were registered at all. So it is possible they did not register the births. I also have 3 siblnigs on the paternal side of my mother's family and they were all born post 1874 and only the first is registered ,despite me looking at 1837 online until eyes pop out. If you know the area she was born try the local registry office, there is a chance that the gro references never got through or were lost.Is it possible that her name you knew her by was her middle name and she is registered under a family name and known by her middle name? I have searched a couple of years either side of her year of birth - I am not really sure where else I can look. Does anyone know if there is a time limit for registering a birth? Julie

Hello, Just wondered how accurate these records are - I have been trying to find the entry for my gran on 1837 online and have had no luck finding her - has anybody else ever had problems like this? Do all births get registered and how long after the birth can they have been registered. Another relative has also tried looking for her, we know where and when she was born and her name at birth - I am very confused!
