Placing a surname

Can anyone help me? I am looking for a way to search for a particular surname in 1850. Is there anywhere that I can enter a surname that will tell me where the concentrations of people with that surname in England and Wales were at that time? This info would be useful as I am looking for a boy who became a Barnardo's Homechild around London. All the information I have is his siblings names and possible parents names. Lynne

somebody would have to put together a national 1851 census database before that would be possible, and then your problem would be solved anyway. The nearest you can get is to look at where the name is found in the 1881 census. Look particularly at the birthplaces of the older males. IGI is also useful for surname distributions, but the gaps in the coverage can make it misleading

should have said that FreeBMD can also give you a good picture of where a surname was distributed at different times in the 19th century. There's a lot of spread over time -- names that were localised in 1800 were all over the place by 1900

Geoff. I have looked at the website suggested but there are so few names on there at present. I am sure it will progress but in the meantime Lynne if you have the 1881 census CD there is a way of "mapping" the surnames from that. I have also seen articles in many of the family history magazines on this mapping exercise. Failing all this if you belong to family history society they will give you some idea as to how to go about what you are suggesting but you will not have to reinvent the wheel as it has already been done. If you give me the name of interest I have a load of mags going back about 8 years which are indexed and I could have a look for you in case I see anything. Another thought is to ask at your local record office. Janet

I have a "Surname Atlas" on CD giving the 1881 distribution. What name are you looking for?
