I did not know that. Did they tell you why they'd pension off healthy young men?

Kathryn, A stray thought - if his marriage licence said "HMS Something-or-Other" it could have been a shore establishment. One of my trails led to HMS Cambridge - a gunnery training school in Plymouth. Regs Jane PS: Did you know that the PRO has an online catalogue and you can at least see if they hold a ship's log for the vessel in question - it's called PROCAT.

Thanks Ann and Joan. Kew is a long way off, so that's out for the time being. It looks like a real brickwall - there are no remotely plausible looking records on 1837online or National Archives so I suppose I'll just have to keep scratching my head for this one.

Hi. It might be useful to put a few searches in google...like 'naval pensions'....I did once find such a site for earlier in that century. Also...was there a war going on at that time?...sorry my history knowledge is small...but there may be casualty lists. Joan

Kew would have the information you need, although I am not sure how much information you require to search for him. A service number would be a great help but may not be necessary. He could quite possibly have beeen pensioned off if he was injured. have you searched for his death on free BMD or 1837online? you have a fairly small window to search between the 1881 and his wife's remarriage. Don't know if this is any help. Ann Glos

I have a relly with this occupation listed on the 1881 census. In 1877 he was actually aboard ship (according to his marriage cert). He was only in his late twenties, so would he have been pensioned off as a result of severe injury or illness? If it was an accident, would there be any record of it anywhere? I cannot find any record of his death, but his wife remarried in 1885.
