Marital status on census returns

On the 1901 census, my great grandparents are living apart. The children split between them. They are both listed as widowed. Perhaps they were trying to deny each others existence. |

I have someone who says she is widowed on 2 census but has her maiden name still. I'm convinced she just said she was widowed to look more respectable ( she had an illegitimate daughter) |

On the 1881 census my gt grandfather was shown as Married (I've had it checked on the actuak census sheet), by 1891 he was Widowed. I spent hours going through the 1881 looking for my gt grandmother, but couldn't find her. Now I have her death certificate, she died in 1876. So even though it said he was Married, he was most definitely a widower in 1881. Just one more thing to confuse us. Jan |
