An ancestor, John Bettesworth of Chichester is shown as a Quaker. His marriage to Christian(a) would be around 1700. Anyone with any ideas as to where the marriage records would be ?.

Hi David, I know there was an article in one on the Family History mags, but cannot lay my hand on it at present (have mountains of them!!) byt you could try sending in a query to Your Family Tree for the Q&A section, you can send it by e mail to the following [email protected] I understand there are quite good records for Quaker marriages etc, so hopefully they can give you the correct answer as to the source, good luck.

From ancestral Trails: Quakers, marriage ceremonies consisted of declaration by the couple. Adults present signed as witnesses. No priest present English law treated Quaker marriages as valid. Quaker registers of births, marriages and burials up to 30 June 1837 were surrendered to the registrar General in 1840 and are held by the PRO in classes RG6 and 8. They contain about 250,000 births, 40,000 marriages and 300,000 burials. After 1837 the Quakers (though subject to civil registration) continued to record births, marriages and burials (later deaths) but they established a new recording system. These registers record births (until 1959), deaths (until 1961) and they still record marriages (registers described in national Index of Parish Registers Vol11). Many of these post 1837 registers are also held by the PRO. Records may be held in "digests" (indexes) at the Library of the Society of Friends at Friends House, 173-177 Euston road, London NW1 2BJ 0171 387 3601. Microfilm of digests can be viewed for a fee. Microfilm copies of digests are also at SOG. For marriages they give the date, spouses names, residences, occupations, and also the names of spouses parents, but not witnesses. friends House holds much other useful material as well. I hope this is what you are looking for Ann Glos
