The ministry of defence is where you need to write to to find this information they now charge a fee and you have to fill out a series of forms, it used to be a lot easier but they have had to change it because of the big demand nowadays. If the person whos records you are looking for died during world war 2 there is a website by the Commonwealth War Graves Commision: www.CWGC.org Which has a searchable database and has 1.7 million names on it from world war 1 and 2. You can search by just the surname if you have very little detail. They will usually say on the record page where that person is buried now, age when they died and when and what regiment they were in. I hope this is of some help to you.

I think it depends on what kind of records. I would suggest sending an e-mail to: [email protected] [formerly Public Record Office] or do a search on the internet narrowing down your terms. Good luck.
