If you need any on-the-spot help maybe I can help. I speak the language too, although English is of course widely spoken here. Jacobs is as you say a very common name. You say that the Dutch site is the best you've seen. You ought to see the Finnish, Russian, Swedish and Norwegian sites, equal, or better. I know that you don't need them, but they are all interesting.

Hi Ann Just had a look, its the best one I've seen yet. Trouble is I am looking for a very common name. My Greatgrandfather was called Johannes Henrick Jacobs b1840ish, and his father was called Johannes Frederick Jacobs. I know my Greatgrandfather came to England via Amsterdam, when he was about 8 to 12 years old. I have been on some Dutch census sites, but because I don't know what area he came from, I'm finding it quite hard. Sandra

Fantastic site Ann. I had a look because some of my husband's ancestors originated there but I've got back as far as a marriage in Sri Lanka in 1766 but the dutch dates on the site aren't back that far. Great that it's in English too.

You may know of this but I just had a message from another family historian and thought I'd share it with you http://genlias(.)nl - remove the brackets Thanks to a marvellous website run by the Dutch Authorities it is now fairly easy to search for ancestors and obtain documents for at least the dutch branches of ancestors, this site is growing all the time and is (Strangely) aimed at Family Historians and he says is entirely free. I think you have to pay for orders though. Best wishes Ann
