If, like me you are new to family research then any idiot proof information might be useful especially if it is cheap. Well, I was reading the supplement in Sat's Mail on Home Truths and if you didn't see it, it gives an outline of how to trace previous owners of your home. You can of course apply their tips of how to hunt to family trees and it certainly made it a little clearer to me what sources of information are available and what steps you might take to get the answers. I hadn't heard of the Kelly's Directory before but then Im still not convinced that I know what 'nudging' is or a 'thread' or most of the other jargon.! Anyway, the second part will be in next week's supplement and I for one will read it. PS I don't work for the Mail and I only read it on a Saturday! Hope someone might find it useful, if not thanks for reading anyway.

Did you not see the articles they did on family tree research? That was quite good also!

Monique, You have posted a thread in this message. Anyone who answers or reads the message is following the "thread". I suppose you could connect it to the story in Greek Mythology, which title escapes me. As for "nudging", you may have noticed that when a "thread" is answered it moves back up the list. What can happen is that if someone is ;ooking for information, or thinks a thread may be important to others, they can nudge it up the list by posting a "nudge" message on it. Hope this helps Paul

Hi Lisa, yes I did see the articles on family research but that was just at the start of my interest. I used one of the sites (moving here) mentioned then to trace some of my family who moved here from Dominica in 1955 . As I have become more familiar with the GC site I notice that it is in the resources section too. So, thanks for repyling and its good to share!!

Thanks Paul, Looking at this in the message list it has finally sunk in what a 'nudge' is and does! By the way might hold fire on researching Murphy until the end of June as I have been following the Belfast roots web 'thread' is that right? and it seems that the Ulster hisorical blah blah might be releasing info. then for general usage. So, a bit of patience and I might be able to search their archives.

Good point re the article in the supplement. I hadnt thought about tracing a house's history until I saw that yesterday. Its going to be my 'new line' to follow now, my parents 200 year old house. Thought if I get anything interesting I could document it to leave with the house should they move on. I didnt realise the deeds gave you info re the previos owners though. cant wait to get my hands on my parents deeds as I know they have hold of them. This could be a whole new area of interest for us amateur geneologists.Penny

Thanks to everyone who replied and for the encouragement. Glad you got as much as I did from the article Penny. I of course, hadn't got a clue about the deeds either! I found it fascinating but was scared to mention it on this board as I thought it would all be so obvious to everyone else! I might well take up any offers of help ... I am wearing very large L plates and will be for some time! Thanks again all
