Thanks Geoff, Seems it may be worth a try, as I believe I know where the bride came from. I was hoping it would give Occupation but suppose you can't have everything !! Thanks for the info, will give it a try and see what it throws up. Cheers, much appreciated Elaine. :-)

The registers I looked at earlier this week had the following: Name of parish (ie the register you are looking in). Whether by Banns or by Licence. His name and parish he lives in. Her name and parish she lives in. Their signatures (or "+ mark of ...") Witnesses' signatures (or "+ mark of ..."). Witnesses may or not be related. Date. Regarding names, as I'm sure you know, a great many people were illiterate. If the vicar had never heard the name before then he could only guess at the spelling - who's to know what was correct? For example I found an Abelwaite but in the same register I found Ebelwhite and Ebelwight. On IGI you will frequently find different spellings for what were probably the same people (eg children of John and Ann Drewry, John and Anne Drury etc). Usually, this is what will have been written in the register.

Has anyone got a copy of a marriage record pre 1837. I am anxious to know how much info is included on them .. would it give grooms occupation for instance (so that I would know its definately my ancestor) and how much more info do they 'normally' give? I have found a marriage on the IGI with the brides name 'similar' to that of which I have been looking for for 9 months. I am hoping this is NOT my marriage BUT will send off for a copy IF it would give enough info so as to say positively YES or NO. Surely, they give MORE details than whats on IGI don't they ??? please someone .. make my day ! I'm REALLY desperate now ! and besides clutching at straws I'm yanking hair out by the hand full !!! :-( Elaine (totally deflated !)
