Just had my request for a 1867 birth cert sent back to me by return of post, from Southwark telling me that due to high volumes of applications they were unable to undertake my request for historical research at present. Oh! the frustration of it all, have they never thought of employing extra staff, I had given all the details they needed, it was hardly research, now I have to wait for the GRO, and they won't be sending my cert out till 29th April. I am keeping my fingers crossed for my Lambeth cert, they said they could provide it, you'd have thought they would be glad of the revenue. Oh well, sorry to gripe. April:-(

I recently had one back from Kent in 6 days from the phonecall and Easter week end was in the middle! Goes to show.

I had the same trouble when I tried to get my grandfathers birth certificate from Southwark. Apparently Southwark was one of the most densely populated areas of England in the nineteenth century so a large proportion of people doing family research end up needing something from Southwark and this has meant that they can no longer cope with the numbers. I agree that it would be worth their while to employ more people and take advantage of the extra income it would generate.
