Hi Zoe There was a workhouse in Stockton in the Portrack area they had lunatic inmates . It later became a hospital and then closed I think around 1950's. I believe it wa sat one stage called St Ann's You could e-mail Stockton Library and ask them the staff in there are excellent. If they have records they will look for you. www.stockton.gov.uk/citizenservices/leisureandents/Libraries Dorothy in Stockton |

Thanks very much everyone for your input. At least I now have a starting point to researching for poor old Harriet, the relative concerned. Zoe, Wellington, NZ |

Zoe I think you may be looking For St Lukes Hospital which was a Psychiatric Hospital in Middlesbrough, also there was a Lunatic Asylum at Sedgefield near Stockton. Hope this helps and as Jo say'a have a look at the website. If you can't find what you need mail me with the details as i may be going to Middlebrough Archives in a week or two. Reagrds Ann |

You could trythe 1901 census for england and wales. They have a vessel section for emmigration and also an institution search facility [workhouses ,prisons and hospitals].good luck,Denis tfn Newcastle. |

Hi Zoe, Have you tried searching for her on the census with just her first initial instead of christion name, one of mine was in an asylum and all the inmates were recorded in this way. Having said that I am fairly sure another is recorded as just FD in an institution in Surrey, initials, age and sex fit but I'm not sure how I could ever prove it was her! Regards Judith |

I believe that 1 of my rellies was in a psych institution in either Middlesborough or Stockton, from 1873 until near her death in 1899. Where can I go to search for the names of potential institutes that she was in, as I can't see her on any census? Any ideas? Thanks. Zoe, Wellington, NZ |
