I have discovered that I have a number of ancestors who were merchant seaman. How do I go about finding records of their careers at sea given that I have absolutely no idea of the names of vessels they may have served on?!?

Hi Daniel, try lookingon http://rmhh(.)co.uk (remove brackets). there is a good link on there to all things mariner or type merchant navy into google. You can get service history of seamen but don't know how much information they need to get it for you. (and you will have to pay for information) Hope the site helps Pam

Daniel, I have traced back to 1600 with each generation having at least 2 of them in the Royal Navy. Ive managed to pick up bits and pieces along the way. The 1881 Census listed the whole crew for my great grandfather. It might be worth checking the PRO for wills. I managed to find one from 1780. Type in Merchant Navy and see what comes up. Good luck
