is the census search case sensitive? I typed in an address in lower case and got zilch. But when I retyped it paying attention to my capital letters I got what I was looking for. Someone else told me they had the problems when they typed in the word 'road'. It only came up when 'Rd' was typed in instead. Makes me wonder how many searches I've mucked up because of this!

I couldn't find my grandfather's family on the 1901 census website, and I even knwo the address they were living at in 1901. It seems that three houses from his street in Woolwich (Cresent Road) are missing, nos.29, 31 and 33. Some young babies also seem to be missed in the census count.

Oh Helen! Yours names did make me laugh! And yes I will keep trying to find two people I know were around and about - Matilda and George Knell. I dread to think what i would need to put in to find them. I'll keep trying JP

I agree - have had loads of spelling errors. Be flexible with age too. I found I had to be flexible with gender too. On 1891 census my gt gt grandmother JEMIMA COATES was on census as JAMES COATES and male in the gender column. Also if you find errors on the index ( not the image) then do report them. I submitted some months ago and have just checked and they have been corrected. Useful if someone else looking for that person/family in the future. I have also had the address problem - a village in Suffolk was re-located to Selkirk,Scotland !

Quite agree. Often it's inability to read census form-filler's handwriting - WHY WEREN'T THE MADE TO USE BLOCK CAPITALS? - compounded by the fact that the transcribers were mainly [I believe] people without specialist knowledge in nomenclature or geography. Errors in my family: Smoothy - transcribed as Lenorthey Jeuel - transcribed as Denel Lemuel - misread as Leonard Limpenhoe, Norfolk mistranscribed as Limperhal Purvey mistranscribed as Curvey Matthews translated as Maththews Cambridge rendered as Camligger! Fortunately, by dint of some thought and trying different searches I tracked these down. But there are many others I haven't found, though I know they must be there somewhere!

This is not a critisism, but just to let people know that all is not lost if you don't seem to be able to locate someone on the 1901 cesus, when you know they must be there somewhere!! The miss-spellings I have encountered are:- Corinna (couldn't find her for weeks) was read as Irene. When I viewed the original doc there was a big ink blob on the name Corinna, the transcriber must have taken a guess at Irene. Illstone (male Christian name) on the census as Ustone. The I & double L must have been mistaken for a U. Hannah, mis read as Homer (Did laugh at that one!) I still have 2 other possibles for that name, Honor & Honoria these were on Ancestry & FreeBMD. These have just made me aware that what I see isn't necessarily what others see....LOL
