I know this sounds like a dumb question but when you get varied spellings of certain names, how on earth do you know you've got the right relative. Eg. I've got a few Truscott's but have also come across Trusket, Trescot etc. what confirms that these are the right people????? TIA

Right age, right place of birth, living with the right people, right job. Spelling is the least of your worries!!! LOL Janice

Tell me about it! My gt gt grandmother is in the parish register of baptisms as Ann MELING, though her siblings are all MALING. On her wedding certificate, she and her father and witnesses are MALING. In all the censuses in which I've traced them, the family are MEALING. One way I checked is that the Malings who were baptised are not in the census indexes as Maling and the Mealings weren't baptised as Mealings, but there are the right birthdates, names, and birth order for both sets. I have filed Ann under MALING as that is the name by which I first came across her, but I've just now checked and its MEALING as her former name on my gt grandfather's birth cert. so perhaps Mealing became the established form. I've often wondered how its pronounced - Meeling/Mayling/Melling? As my Mum says, good job they stuck to one L!
